The 13th academic report of the Online Seminar Series was successfully held on January 9, 2023. Professor LeDoux gave an invited talk entitled " What Happened to the Mental in Mental Disorders".
During the Shanghai Covid lockdown, ION/CEBSIT held the 10th Academic Review Meeting of lab heads through the Internet from May 25 to May 31, 2022.
The 21th CEBSIT (ION) annual scientific meeting was held during December 26th to 28th, 2021.The meeting started from Dr. DU Jiulin’s director report, and he talked about the center’s 14th five year plan, research findings, grant applications, intellectual property transfer, human resources, education and facilities in 2021.
On January 13 and January 14, 2022, the first session of the Neuroscience Bulletin Online Seminar Series in 2022 was successfully held. The Online Seminar Series are initiated by CEBSIT,and sponsored by Neuroscience Bulletin, with the aim of inviting internationally renowned scientists to exchange ideas with researchers of CEBSIT and their colleagues at home and abroad.
The State Key Laboratory of Neuroscience (SKLN) held the third academic committee on Dec 14th, 2021. The meeting was chaired by Academician Nancy Yip, director of the Academic Committee. Academician POO Muming emphasized the goals of SKLN in the reorganization process. DU Jiulin, director of the laboratory, gave a comprehensive report about the laboratory's scientific research progress, management operation and reorganization plan in 2021.
From December 11th to 12th, the 2021 annual conference of Strategic Priority Research Program “Brain Cognition and Brain-inspired Technology” was successfully held. The online and offline conferences combined with three sub-venues in Beijing, Shanghai and Kunming. The meeting invited 6 experts including WANG Yizheng, GAN Wenbiao, WU Xihong, LIU Jia, SUN Fuchun and PAN Gang. More than 80 people attended the meeting.

To foster collaboration and scientific discussion, the Research Division of “Cellular and Developmental Neurobiology”at CEBSIT, where researchers present results from ongoing projects. On Nov. 10th, the third seminar of this seminar series was successfully held in conference room A405. Dr. DU Jiulin, the Deputy Director of CEBSIT, and more than 50 researchers participated in this seminar.

To foster collaboration and scientific discussion, the Research Division of “New technologies for brain research” at the Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, held a seminar series, where researchers presented results from ongoing projects.
On September 24, 2021, the Online Seminar Series at CEBSIT/ION have successfully kicked off. These Online Seminars are initiated by the Seminar Committee of CEBSIT and sponsored by Neuroscience Bulletin. This first Online Seminar was delivered by Prof. Cyril Herry from the University of Bordeaux in France. Dr. Chun XU, Chair of the Seminar Committee at CEBSIT, hosted the Seminar, and more than 80 researchers from the Center participated in it.
On September 13th, the winners of the third "XPLORER PRIZE" were officially announced, and 50 young scientists won this honor. Dr. SUN Yangang of the Centre for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was one of the five scientists in the life sciences who were honored this year.

The 7th China Zebrafish Conference (CZFC 2021) was held at Guiyang during July 20th to 24th, 2021. CEBSIT / ION researchers attended the conference and presented their latest research progress by using zebrafish as model organism. Dr. Jiulin Du gave a Plenary Lecture on Mapping Whole-Brain Neuronal Connectom of Larval Zebrafish. Drs. Kai Wang, Yu Mu, Rongkun Tao, Jia Li, Mei Wang, and Huaxing Zi from CEBSIT / ION gave invited talks during the symposiums at CZFC 2021.
CEBSIT held a summer school themed “to know and explore the secrets of the brain” successfully from July 5 to July 16, 2021. This summer school selected students from different domestic universities, aiming to improve college students' understanding and interest in brain science and intelligent technology, and attract excellent students to the brain science field.
CEBSIT held a scientific summer camp in Taojiang, Hunan Province from July 17 to July 19, 2021. Prof. POO Muming, chaired this event with 30 volunteers from the Center. The Summer Camp is aimed “to lead the middle school students to explore brain science world, and feel the charm of brain science”.
Research Division of Neural Basis Perception held the 4th Seminar on July 7, 2021, which was hosted by Dr. SUN Yangang.
CEBSIT Commencement was held on June 23, 2021. Mentors, graduates and their families joined the commencement.
"Literary Classics and personal Cultivation" lecture was held on June 10, 2021. Sr. editor and Professor, SONG Binghui, from Shanghai International Studies University, presented this lecture to CEBSIT students and staffs.
On the morning of June 8, CEBSIT held a grand naming of Minor Planet "Chang Hsiang-Tung" Ceremony and academic report meeting to commemorate Academician Chang Hsiang-Tung in order to vigorously promote the patriotic dedication and rigorous academic spirit of the older generation of scientists represented by the founder of Chinese neurophysiology, Academician Chang Hsiang-Tung. The meeting was hosted by Dr. WANG Zuoren, deputy director of CEBSIT.
In order to broaden the students’ horizons of life, provide a new perspective and thinking of career development, CEBSIT held "What if the dream comes true" graduate employment and young talent career planning guidance meeting.
CEBSIT’s project "Visual Information Processing and the Neural Mechanism of Behavior Occurrence" by DU Jiulin, MU Yu, LI Ying, YAO Yuanyuan, and ZHANG Baibing won the 2020 Shanghai Natural Science Award (First Prize) .
The annual Science Day of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was held as scheduled with the theme of "Scientific Dreams and New Achievements ".
The 20th CEBSIT (ION) annual meeting was held at the Campus Lecture Hall from December 24th to 26th, 2020. More than 400 researchers attended this meeting.During the beginning of this meeting, Dr. DU Jiulin gave the Director’s Report on Center’s progress in the year of 2020. And Dr. POO Muming gave his Scientific Director’s Report entitled “From hypothesis research to global views of biology” before the end of the meeting. Seventy-nine researchers, mainly graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, presented their recent progress.
As one of the important activities of China-Russia Innovation Year of Science and Technology, China-Russia Workshop on Neuroscience was successfully held from July 13 to 15, 2020. Due to the prevention and control of the COVID-19 epidemic, the Workshop was held online. Most of the Chinese scientists joined this workshop at the lecture hall of CEBSIT. More than 60 Russian scientists in the field of brain science and intelligent technology participated in through internet.
The State Key Laboratory of Neuroscience (SKLN) held the 2020 Annual Review Meeting of the research groups on June 5th, 2020. The laboratory invited Professors MA Lan and YANG Zhengang from Fudan University, WANG Yizheng from the Chinese Academy of Military Medical Sciences, and the experts from the Institute of Neuroscience reviewed the research progresses of each research group in 2019.
From May 25th to 31st, the 9th Academic Review of ION/CEBSIT lab heads and the 10th International Advisory Board Meeting were held in ION. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, most of the reviewers joined this meeting through the Internet.
CAS Brain Science and Intelligence Technology Forum for Young Scholars was successfully held from May 21 to May 22, 2021.
In order to explore new dimensions for the cultivation of graduate students’ scientific research literacy, CEBSIT offers a series of “transferrable skills courses” each year.
CEBSIT Voluntary Team was awarded the honorary title of "Advanced Collective of Science Popularization Work in the 13th Five-Year Plan" of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The Annual Review Meeting of the State Key Laboratory of Neuroscience was held on April 15th, 2021. The laboratory invited Profs. MA Lan and ShU Yousheng from Fudan University, Prof. LUO Zhenge from Shanghai University of Science and Technology, Prof. XU Tianle from Shanghai Jiaotong University, and Prof. WANG Yizheng.
The theme of the forum is "Zebrafish Brain Atlas", focusing on drawing and application of zebrafish brain maps. Nearly 50 researchers from various platforms and research groups of the center participated in the forum.
Recently, a novel coronavirus epidemic has occurred in the country. Most CEBSIT / ION students have to stay at home according to the guideline from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Prof. Muming Poo, the scientific director of the center, decided to give online lectures in neurobiology from February 10, 2020. All the students can join the lectures at home through the website called Bilibili.
The Fourth Sleep Research Frontier Forum was held by CEBSIT on March 18, 2011. The theme of this forum is "Sleep - Wake Neural Circuit", focusing on the regulation of sleep - wake behavior by different brain regions and different types of neurons discovered in recent years.
After a brief introduction by CEBSIT, some students went to the Primate Social Cognition Research Lab, Translated Brain Imaging Research Lab, Neural Circuit and Animal Behavior Research Lab, Neural Circuit and Behavior Regulation Research Lab, Choice and Recognition Lab.

CEBSIT held Neuroscience Bulletin ( NB ) new editorial meeting on January 18, 2021. Prof. POO Muming, Scientific Director of CEBSIT, and Prof. DUAN Shumin, the editor-in-chief of NB, a total of 33 people attended the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Dr. WANG Zuoren, deputy director of the center.
On January 20, 2020, a delegation from Fujian Medical University, led by President. Xiao-Chun CHEN, visited our Institute. They visited Drs. Hui Yang and Zhiqi Xiong’s Labs, Optical Imaging Facility and Brain Imaging Center. President Chen also conveyed greetings to the students from Fujian Medical University working in CEBSIT.
The 20th ION annual meeting was held at the Campus Lecture Hall from December 27th to 29th, 2019. More than 350 researchers attended this meeting.
On Nov. 25th -27th 2019,YANG Hui attended the “Frontiers in Genome Engineering 2019” conference and gave a speech entitled “Genome editing and gene therapies”.
On November 27th, 2019, a symposium on frontiers of neuroscience was held at the “320 campus” in honor of the 20th anniversary of ION. ION alumni from around the country and abroad, as well as current ION members, attended the symposium and enjoyed this reunion.
On November 18th and 19th, the 2019 International Forum on Mesoscopic Brain Connectome was held in the Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology (CEBSIT) and Institute of Neuroscience (ION), Chinese Academy of Sciences. The forum was chaired by Prof. Muming Poo (Director of ION and CEBSIT) and co-sponsored by the Science and Technology Commission Shanghai Municipality (STCSM), CEBSIT, ION and State Key Laboratory of Neuroscience.
The State Council Information Office of China holds a seminar to focus on the Chinese Academy of Sciences' scientific achievements during the past seven decades, Nov. 19, 2019. BAI Chunli, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, WANG Keqiang, Deputy Secretary General of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, POO Muming, Director of the Institute of Neuroscience, CAS, participated in this seminar.
On November 18th, the 2019 award ceremony of Ho Leung Ho Lee (HLHL) Foundation was held in Beijing, and 56scientists won the 2019 HLHL awards. Dr. YANG Hui from CEBSIT won the "Science and Technology Progress Award". Dr. LIU Zhen from CEBSIT won the "science and Technology Innovation Award".
On Nov. 14th -15th 2019,YANG Hui visited the Royal Society of the United Kingdom, the U.S. National Academy of Medicine and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and attended the international human germline genome editing commission.
Collège de France academic year inaugural colloquium was held at Paris, France on October 9-11, 2019. The theme of this colloquium is “Research and innovation: what future?” Prof. Mu-ming Poo was invited to attend this event by Prof. Alain Prochiantz, president of College de France. He gave a lecture entitled “Of monkeys and men – Use of non-human primates for studying human biology and diseases”.
On Sep 27th 2019,YANG Hui visited Yonsei University College of Medicine and gave a lecture entitled “Perfecting Targeting in CRISPR’’.
Prof. Mu-ming Poo co-chaired the International Brain Initiative (IBI) Session and gave a presentation during this session. The IBI session is a special program of the 10th IBRO World Congress of Neuroscience (IBRO 2019), which was held at Daugu, Korea on September 21-25, 2019.
Tuebingen, Germany on September 16 -19, 2019. The lecture was entitled “Non-human primate studies in neuroscience and biomedicine”.
The 13th Biennial Conference of Chinese Neuroscience Society (CNS 2019) was held at Suzhou during October 10th to 13th, 2019. About 100 CEBSIT / ION researchers attended this conference and presented their recent progress.
Prof. Jiawei Zhou participated the 10th IBRO World Congress of Neuroscience which was held in Sept. 21-25, 2019 in Daegu, Korea. He organized and chaired a symposium entitled ‘The role of NG2 glia in brain disorders’ which was well received by the audience. During the symposium, he gave a presentation showing a novel function of NG2 glia in the regulation of brain innate immunity and its implication for Parkinson’s disease.
Professor Jiawei Zhou was invited to participate the 2nd Sino-German Symposium on Cell Fate and Tumorigenesis: From Models to Human Diseases, which took place in Homburg, Germany in early September of 2019. He gave an informative presentation during the meeting, describing their recent findings on the role of NG2 glia, the fourth type of glial cells in the CNS, in the regulation of brain innate immunity.
During Sep 23-25, 2019, Dr. QIU Zilong was invited to attend the 10th IBRO Word Congress of Neuroscience held by International Brain Research Organization in South Korea , and gave a talk entitled “Understanding the genetic architecture of autism”.

Prof. Mu-ming Poo gave a keynote lecture during the 2019 World AI Conference, in the Brain-Inspired Artificial Intelligence and Collective Intelligence Forum, which was held at Shanghai Expo Center on August 30th, 2019.
The twelfth Sino-German Frontiers of Science Symposium (SINOGFOS) was held in Lübeck, Germany from May 23 to 26, 2019. German and Chinese young scientists had a cross-disciplinary discussion on six cutting-edging scientific topics including Cell Imaging at the Atomic Resolution, Deep Brain Stimulation, Exoplanet Finding, Genome Editing, Reconstructing Ancient Climates, and Robots and Autonomous Systems. Dr YE Zheng co-chaired this year’s symposium and organized the Deep Brain Stimulation session.
From 12thto 16th , June in 2019, Dr. Jiulin Du was invited to attend the 14th ‘International Zebrafish Conference at Suzhou, China and gave an academic report named ‘Anatomical and functional logic of the locus coeruleus system’ on the conference.
From May 28th to 30th, the 8th Academic Review of ION PIs and the 9th International Advisory Board Meeting were held in Shanghai.
During Nov. 15 - 17, 2017, the International Workshop on Zebrafish Neural Circuits and Behavior, a three-day meeting, was held at the Neuroscience Center Building in Rockville, Maryland. Prof. Jiu-lin Du and Dr. Chun-feng Shang were invited to attend this meeting.
On Oct 12th, 2016, Dr. DU Jiulin (Institute of Neuroscience, Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, CAS) was awarded the 11th Shanghai Peony Award for his research on the studies of neural circuit mechanisms underlying visuomotor transformation and adaptive behavior generation, and molecular mechanisms underlying brain vascular development.
On July 26, 2016, Prof. DU Jiulin’s research group published an invited commentary paper entitled “A Death Trap for Microglia” in Developmental Cell to recommend two research articles published in the same issue of Developmental Cell and the latest issue of Cell Reports, respectively.
Based on recommendations of the International Academic Review Committee, ION senior investigators have voted anonymously to promote Dr. Wei Wang to ION senior investigator.
From May 30 to June 1, the 7th Academic Review of ION PIs and the 8th International Advisory Board Meeting were held in Shanghai.In the afternoon of June 1st, committee members gave talks in the Shanghai Symposium on Frontiers of Neuroscience organized by ION.
During April 16 – 18, Dr. Jiulin Du was invited to attend an international neuroscience symposium on “Linking cellular properties to neuronal network dynamics” held in Marseille, France, and gave a talk entitled “Mapping neural circuits with a whole-brain scale by using larval zebrafish”.
From February 23 to March 17, the ION Mini-Course on “Scientific Communication, Integrity and Innovation” was held in the SIBS main lecture hall by Prof. Mu-ming Poo (ION). More than 200 researchers attended the classes, mostly students from ION and including some were from other SIBS institutes.
The 2016 ION Annual Meeting was held at the Campus Lecture Hall from December 25th to 27th, 2016. During the opening remark of the meeting, Prof. Mu-Ming Poo gave a talk entitled “Institute of Neuroscience at the Crossroad”. He introduced the progress of the ION faculty recruitment, 9.4T fMRI setup, CAS Center for Excellence in Brain Science and Intelligence Technology (CEBSIT) Shao Xing Campus for Science and Technology and the establishment review of the CEBSIT.
